French Banknote Artists

French banknotes issued before 1930, and french colonies before 1960, will often have the artists and engraver's names listed in the lower margin of the face or back side along with a short code stating what type of work they did. This information is difficult to determine when not listed on the note, but bank documents may show this or even more descriptive information on artists that contributed their work. For the time being, I am listing the four major types defined here, when the information is available.

INV: (Latin: invenit; French: a inventé) the original artist
DEL: (Latin: delineavit; French: a dessiné), producer of the definitive sketch of the design
SC: (Latin: sculpsit; French: a sculpté), engraver of the plate (or other medium for printing)
FEC: (Latin: fecit; French: a fait), "he made it" - a broader term used when one person has the role of both INV and DEL
