Jules Piel
Jules Piel (born on October 1, 1882 in Paris's 18th arrondissement1 and died on September 19, 1978 in Orléans), was a French designer and engraver of banknotes and postage stamps.
Biography
Studying at the École Estienne, in which he was a pupil of Henri-Joseph Dubouchet, he then entered the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where his master was Jules Jacquet.
Second Second Grand Prix de Rome in intaglio in 1908 and First Grand Prix in 19102, he resided in Rome at the Villa Médicis until his mobilization in 1914. After the war, he returned there to finish his studies until 1920.
Chevalier in 1937, then Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1947, he was made Commander of the National Order of Merit in 1976.
