André Maillart
Diomède-André Maillart, known as André Maillart or D. A. Maillart, born in Paris on September 7, 1886 and died in Nice in September 1951, was a French draughtsman, engraver and illustrator. He was the nephew of Diogène Maillart.
Biography
Like his older brother René Alcide, André joined Jean-Léon Gérôme's drawing studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Parisa. In 1904, Jean-Léon Gérôme was succeeded by painter Gabriel Ferrier, so André Maillart also studied under him, while taking part in the etching, woodcutting and lithography workshop run by aquafortist Charles Albert Waltner, son of Charles Jules Waltner.
André Maillart left Paris in October 1934, lured to Nice by architect friend François Aragon to take over as director of the École des Arts décoratifs. Succeeding Paul Audra's twenty years in the post, Maillart was also entrusted with drawing and painting courses for decorators and sculptors. In close collaboration with architect Aragon, he played an active role in the school's renovation in the Villa Arson.
